Texas Sales Tax Holiday Aug. 7–9: What San Antonio Families Should Know Before School Starts

If you have been putting off back-to-school shopping, this weekend is the time to act. Texas holds its annual sales tax holiday Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9, 2026, and the Texas Comptroller expects shoppers across the state to save a combined $142.5 million in state and local taxes. For San Antonio families, that is real money back in your pocket at exactly the moment summer budgets are feeling stretched.

The holiday applies to most clothing, footwear and school supplies priced under $100 per item. That means a $45 pair of sneakers, a $30 backpack and a bundle of notebooks can all cross the register tax-free. Items above the $100 threshold do not qualify, so it pays to check price tags before you check out.

You do not have to be a parent to benefit. Anyone buying qualifying items in Texas this weekend avoids the tax. But families are clearly the primary winners, and in a city where school districts like North East ISD, Northside ISD, San Antonio ISD, South San Antonio ISD, Judson ISD, Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD and Comal ISD are either already in session or days away from opening, the timing could not be more useful.

So what does a sales tax holiday have to do with buying, selling, renting or owning a home? More than you might expect.

For home buyers who recently closed, this weekend is a gift. Moving into a new house means stocking up fast, and if you have children, school shopping lands right on top of settling-in expenses. Whether you purchased a home in Stone Oak, Helotes, Converse, Cibolo, Schertz or New Braunfels, you are probably juggling utility deposits, new furniture and enrollment paperwork all at once. Shaving tax off a cart full of kids' clothes and supplies is a small but welcome break.

For sellers preparing a home for the market, the holiday is worth thinking about from a different angle. Staging a home to appeal to families means presenting spaces that feel livable and organized. If your target buyer has school-age children, they are acutely aware of school district boundaries and the cost of getting kids ready for fall. Listing in a neighborhood served by a sought-after district, such as areas zoned to Comal ISD in the 78132 ZIP code around New Braunfels, or communities feeding into Northside ISD in ZIP codes like 78250 and 78251, already gives you an edge. A weekend that puts a few extra dollars in buyers' pockets can keep momentum high during what is traditionally a busy stretch of the summer market.

For renters, especially those who moved into a new apartment or rental home this summer in areas like the Medical Center corridor, Leon Valley, Universal City or Live Oak, the tax holiday lines up with a period when budgets are already tight. First and last month's rent, security deposits and utility start-up costs add up fast. Saving even twenty or thirty dollars on school supplies and clothes for two or three kids is not trivial when you are rebuilding your financial footing.

For homeowners who are not moving anywhere, this is simply a good weekend to take care of annual household needs. Replacing worn-out athletic shoes, buying uniforms for kids enrolled in San Antonio ISD or Edgewood ISD schools, or picking up art supplies for a teenager heading into high school are all everyday expenses that qualify. Online purchases from Texas-based retailers also count, as long as the order is placed and accepted during the holiday window.

A few practical notes before you head out. The $100 limit applies per item, not per transaction, so splitting a $150 item into two won't make it exempt. Layaway counts if you make or continue a layaway payment during the holiday period. Most sporting equipment and protective gear do not qualify, even if you use them for school activities, so check the Texas Comptroller's list if you are unsure about a specific item.

San Antonio's major retail corridors along Loop 1604, U.S. 281 and I-10 will see heavier-than-usual traffic this weekend. If you prefer to avoid crowds, shopping early Friday morning or placing an online order Thursday night for Friday delivery can help.

The bottom line is this: whether you are a new homeowner in Cibolo stretching a moving budget, a renter in Alamo Ranch managing a tight month, or a longtime homeowner in Terrell Hills doing routine back-to-school shopping, the August 7–9 tax holiday is worth planning around. Three days goes fast, so make your list now.
